What Makes Bookkeeping a Good Career Choice?

Bookkeeping has become a profession in its own right in the last 10 years. It is increasing in demand in Australia, UK, USA, Canada and New Zealand. This has been due to a number of factors, specifically the increase in small business and the legislative compliance placed on small business.

Most of the countries where bookkeeping has been increasing in demand have a VAT, GST, or other federal, state or local tax. Due to the increased compliance small business often finds it is necessary to employ someone to handle the day to day bookkeeping. This is sometimes due the business owner not having the knowledge or time to get the information required by government departments on time and accurately accounted for.

Bookkeeping has slowly increased its professional rankings due to the additional compliance and necessity of business owners needing these specialists skills. More and more small business owners are turning to bookkeeping staff to undertake their requirements, as traditional accounting staff are too expensive to hire on a continuous basis.

This has created an increasing industry for bookkeepers to be involved with. It is a specialized area, but not so specialized that it requires many years of training. Theoretical education is important in credits, credits and the accounting equation to understand how bookkeeping works, but it also requires on the job experience to really understand how bookkeeping for different organizations works.

Sometimes people fall into bookkeeping by helping a family member or friend do their books. Sometimes people start as a receptionist or accounts work and gradually take on further responsibilities. Other times people undertake study to become a bookkeeper straight out of school. It is a career which can progress both form education or from experience. Either way, it is an exciting career choice. Legislation changes, roles change and the more legislation, which is in place to control small business records, the more work a bookkeeper can find.
